# Bypass with Null Byte and Extension Validation

Bypass with Null Byte and Extension Validation notes for PortSwigger Web Security Academy labs, including exploitation workflow, payload testing, Burp Suite validation, and remediation context.

### File Path Traversal, Validation of File Extension with Null Byte Bypass

This lab presents a vulnerability of path traversal when displaying the product images. / The application checks that the filename provided ends well with the expected extension.

The objective is to read the contents of the **/etc/passwd** file.

#### **Analysis**

If the path is provided directly

```bash
../../../../etc/passwd
```

The application returns an error because it requires the file to have the extension **.jpg**.

In older versions of PHP (before **5.3.4**), it was possible to use a zero **byte (%00)** to bypass this validation: / the PHP engine stopped reading the file name at the null byte, while the application continued to see a valid extension.

#### **Payload**

Add a null byte before the extension:

```bash
%00.jpg
```

The browser still interprets ".jpg", but PHP stops at " /etc/passwd", which allows you to read the sensitive file.

```bash
../../../../etc/passwd%00.jpg
```

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://hacking-notes.jord4n.pro/web/path-traversal/bypass-with-null-byte-and-extension-validation.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
